Kalkan, Turkey and surrounding areas

This former fishing village has retained its authentic charm and is still considered one of Turkey’s top hidden spots. Home to a number of artists, intellectuals and writers, the town’s cobbled streets and whitewashed houses attract a more Bohemian crowd. Kalkan is around 120 kilometres from Dalaman Airport. This distance has the advantage of deterring the package holiday crowd, which may explain why Kalkan has kept its beauty and its charm.

Historic attractions
Explore the ruins at Patara, around seventeen kilometres from Kalkan. These ruins are hidden behind Patara Beach and well worth exploring. They are dotted over the landscape and usually free of crowds. This spot is especially beautiful at sunset.

Out and about
Explore the nearby Patara Beach. This beach is a whopping twenty kilometres long, meaning there is space – and privacy – for anyone who wants complete beach seclusion. It’s also underdeveloped, thanks to its status as a nature reserve. The undergrowth behind the beach hides some intriguing ruins. The surrounding waters are superb for diving and you’ll see all kinds of underwater creatures. Relax at one of Kalkan’s sophisticated beach clubs or Head to one of Kalkan’s famous rooftop restaurants for a meal and a spot of stargazing.

Day trips
Head to the Greek island of Meis for a wander around the shops and tavernas. If you’re feeling adventurous, join a tubing or canoeing expedition on the nearby Xanthos River. A little further afield, the ancient city of Letoon is a fabulous day trip and a tantalising glimpse into ancient Turkey.
