Kas, Turkey and surrounding areas
A small yachting and fishing village, Kas is around 150 kilometres from Dalaman Airport and 170 kilometres from Antalya City. Like Kalkan, the distance from the airport has deterred budget holidaymakers and unsightly development. Kas is a small and very pretty town perched between the Mediterranean Sea and the Taurus Mountains behind. The area enjoys long, hot summer and mild winters. In fact, it’s the most southerly of all Turkey’s resorts. Kas is a hill town and has wide, panoramic views of the sea. It’s a bohemian place and artists, writers and musicians head here to escape big city life – and for the privacy and anonymity that Kas brings. Historic attractions The ancient city of Perge is just sixteen kilometres from Kas, and well worth a visit just for its stunning acropolis. Otherwise, head down to Patara Beach and explore the Lycian ruins hidden in the undergrowth. Out and about Like neighbouring Kalkan, Kas’s waters are great for diving. You can head out with a group of experienced divers or start from scratch with a few lessons. There are plenty of water sports available at the neighbouring beaches, including jet skiing and canoeing - perfect for family outings. Kas is home to some decent Turkish wines, so make sure you sample some of the local produce. Day trips Trek up into the mountains to the ancient city of Termessos. Due to its seclusion it’s an incredibly well-preserved site. Take a trip to the nearby island of Meis for a spot of Greek culture. Go on an all-day cruise around the area on a traditional Turkish gullet. Lunch is provided on these tours, which take in the best swimming and snorkelling spots around.
